NEWS AND NOTES:

A Festival 250 Years in the Making!

The DSO pays homage to one of the greatest composers who ever lived, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and celebrates his 250th birthday with two-week Mozart Festival: Nov. 24-26 and Nov. 30-Dec. 3. Visiting conductor Jerzy Semkow leads the first weekend of concerts which feature the DSO’s own magnificent Principal Violist in the solo spotlight, Alexander Mishnaevski, paired with guest violinist Elmar Oliveira in Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat major. Highlighting week two of the festival is a new completion of Mozart’s “Great” C Minor Mass by renowned scholar Robert Levin. Left incomplete by the composer in 1783, Levin’s adaptation goes far beyond any previous editor’s modifications, presenting a totally new way of understanding Mozart’s intentions. German conductor Helmuth Rilling, who made an acclaimed recording of this new completion, leads the DSO with a roster of superb soloists and the University of Michigan Chamber Choir. DSO + DIA = A perfect DAY!

Now through January 7, 2007, the Annie Leibovitz: American Music exhibition presents powerful and profound photographs of iconic musicians at the Detroit Institute of Arts. In a special collaboration with the DSO, patrons of both organizations can take advantage of a shuttle stop behind the DIA for Thursday and Friday morning coffee concerts. To enjoy a day of music and music-themed art: park in the DIA’s Cultural Center lot behind the museum; take the shuttle to Orchestra Hall; then return to the DIA for lunch and the exhibit! DSO subscribers who use the DIA shuttle stop receive a discount to the Leibovitz exhibit. For tickets or information, call Chuck Dyer at (313) 576-5130 or email cdyer@dso.org.

What’s all the Arm Waving About?
A New DSO TV Program!

This fall, a creative meeting of minds at the DSO and Detroit Public Television conceived a new series titled “Random Acts of Music.” A show about classical music, but with an element of surprise, the program invites audiences to discover today’s music making and delve into intriguing musical topics. Hosted by CBC “Music and Company” radio personality Tom Allen, the program launched in October with an exploration of the role of the conductor. Contributing interviews and insight are DSO conductors Peter Oundjian, Thomas Wilkins and Rachel Lauber, while a group called the CutTime Players (featuring DSO members) give a sidewalk performance in a unique Detroit location. The program will be rebroadcast in the coming months. For a schedule and to view the performance, visit www.dptv.org. This program is made possible through the generosity of Judy and Stanley Frankel.
