NEWS AND NOTES:

The Sound is Out!
DSO and WRCJ Co-Produce New Program

A marriage made in heaven, the DSO and WRCJ 90.9 FM are collaborating on a new two-hour radio program to be called “DSO Unmasked,” which will begin airing this fall at noon on Sundays.

The show will feature lively and in-depth discussions about diverse musical topics with the world-class artists that perform at Orchestra Hall. Musical examples chosen by the artists themselves will be played, plus a segment of eclectic selections in the style of “desert island discs.” The show will also be available “on demand” through the WRCJ Web site. Complete program details can be received by registering for the DSO’s insider email newsletter, Noteworthy at www.detroitsymphony.com.

A World of Music

“The DSO is committed to great music of all genres,” says Kendra Whitlock, the DSO staff person who programs Pops, jazz, world music and other adventuresome musical events at The Max. “Presenting world music is an outgrowth of our interest in varied programming, such as our Jazz Club Series and Poetry Slams, as well as classical concerts that are heavily influenced by other genres, including jazz and gospel.”

DSO Archive Project

Love history? The DSO does, and especially now that a special grant has enabled the organization to begin building a true Archive. While this project is still in the early phases, the goal is to enable researchers and the public to access and enjoy the rich history of the DSO and Orchestra Hall. Retired bassoonist and DSO Historian Paul Ganson is writing a definitive DSO history, which will be published by the Wayne State University Press. In the meantime, a new quarterly newsletter, The Measure, will keep interested parties up to date on Archive developments, such as a new database in progress containing information on DSO conductors, musicians, guest artists and performance history, as well as a catalog of photos, music, recordings and other artifacts in the DSO collection. To receive a complimentary copy of The Measure, please email archive@dso.org.

DSO + MySpace = Cool Idea!

Continuing to provide accessibility to the wonderful world of classical, jazz and Pops music presentations to a diverse audience, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra recently launched its own web page on MySpace.com. As one of the top ten internet sites in the world, MySpace.com offers users the service of searching and posting music, video and messages while communicating with an enormous network of friends. With DSO education and outreach programs reaching as many as 75,000 youths annually, the DSO’s MySpace page will provide young musicians access to information about activities ranging from educational series, auditions, internships, performances and more. Features include a calendar listing for upcoming concerts, a blog and a list of the DSO’s friends.
